What to count in a flooring installation price
- Prep time: removing the old floor, leveling and moving furniture
- Install time for the whole crew, plus trim and transitions
- Materials with waste for cuts, and the underlayment and trim
- Disposal, blades and tool wear, and travel
- Overhead and your margin after all costs
Worked example
With a crew of 2 for 10 hours at $28 an hour, $1,500 in flooring, underlayment and trim, $80 in disposal, tools and travel, 15% overhead and a 30% margin, the job costs $2,461 and the price comes to $3,516. That is $7.03 per square foot for 500 square feet of floor, $1,055 profit, and a 42.9% markup on cost.
Margin is not markup
Margin is profit as a share of the price; markup is profit as a share of your cost. A 30% margin needs a 42.9% markup, because the profit is measured against a smaller number. Mixing the two up can leave a busy season with less money than you planned. This calculator asks for the margin you want and shows the matching markup.
The Flooring Estimate & Job Costing workbook (C$19.00, Excel, also opens in Google Sheets) keeps your rates in one price book, builds a printable client quote, and tracks what each job really cost and made, so your next price is based on your own numbers.
Questions
LABOUR ONLY OR WITH MATERIALS?
If the client buys the flooring, set the materials line to the small items you still supply. The calculator then gives a labour price per square foot.
HOW MUCH WASTE SHOULD I ALLOW?
It depends on the material and the room layout. Add your usual waste to the materials line so the price covers it.
