What to count in a house cleaning price

Worked example

With a crew of 2 for 3 hours at $20 an hour, $15 in cleaning supplies for this clean, $15 in travel and parking, 15% overhead and a 25% margin, the job costs $173 and the price comes to $230. That is $0.115 per square foot for 2,000 square feet of home, $58 profit, and a 33.3% markup on cost.

Margin is not markup

Margin is profit as a share of the price; markup is profit as a share of your cost. A 30% margin needs a 42.9% markup, because the profit is measured against a smaller number. Mixing the two up can leave a busy season with less money than you planned. This calculator asks for the margin you want and shows the matching markup.

Price every job this way, and keep the records

The Cleaning Business Pricing & Job Costing workbook (C$19.00, Excel, also opens in Google Sheets) keeps your rates in one price book, builds a printable client quote, and tracks what each job really cost and made, so your next price is based on your own numbers.

Questions

PER HOUR, PER SQUARE FOOT OR FLAT RATE?

All three can work. Clients like flat rates; the calculator shows the per square foot and per hour figures behind a flat rate so you know it covers your costs.

HOW DO I PRICE A DEEP CLEAN?

Run it again with the longer hours and extra supplies. The difference shows how much more a deep clean should cost than a standard clean.

This calculator is a planning tool, not financial or tax advice. Check the results against your own records before you rely on them.
